To eliminate or reduce the mess, you can use a syphon and small hose to suck most of the oil out prior to removing the cover, or tip the sled on it''s side opposite the chaincase; remove the cover, remove the oil with a siphon or turkey baster (don''t let the wife see!!)

Normally your oil-filler-cap is loed on your valve cover and you do not have direct access to the oil-reservoir through that. What could work is to use the opening where your dipstick normally sits. You''d need a small enough hose to get it down there. I would not
